Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for a medical cannabis card in Utah, patients must be diagnosed with one of the state-approved medical conditions, such as chronic pain, cancer, PTSD additional information is needed when using this qualifying condition, epilepsy, or nausea associated with a serious medical condition. A recommendation from a certified medical provider is required.
Application Process:
Patients must apply for a medical cannabis card through the state’s online portal. After receiving a recommendation from a licensed provider, patients can apply and pay a registration fee. You can register here important to note that after completing a consultation with a QMP you must meet with a Pharmacist on your first Visit to any pharmacy
Purchasing Cannabis:
Medical cannabis can only be purchased from licensed dispensaries in Utah. Patients are not permitted to purchase cannabis from other individuals or out-of-state sources.
Utah’s Medical Cannabis Restrictions
Utah has strict laws regarding medical cannabis use. To avoid legal issues and ensure safe consumption, please follow these important regulations:

No Flame to Flower – Only vaporization is allowed; open-flame combustion is prohibited.

No Public Consumption – Cannabis cannot be used in public, whether indoors or outdoors.

No Using or Possessing an Expired Card – Always keep your medical cannabis card up to date.

No Driving Under the Influence – It is illegal to operate a vehicle while impaired by cannabis.

No Crossing State Lines – Transporting medical cannabis across state borders is not allowed.

No Sharing, Selling, or Giving Away Medical Cannabis – Cannabis is for personal use only.

No Consumption in the Presence of a Minor – Cannabis use should always be in a private setting, away from children.

No Cannabis Use While Pregnant or Breastfeeding – Cannabis products are not permitted for use during pregnancy or while nursing.

For First-Time Card Holders
If you have just received your medical cannabis card, here are the steps you need to take:

Make an Appointment with a Pharmacist – A consultation with a pharmacist is required before purchasing medical cannabis in Utah. They will guide you on product selection and proper dosage.

Keep a Usage Journal – Track your symptoms, dosage, and effects to optimize your treatment plan and discuss any necessary adjustments with your provider.

Schedule Your Annual Renewal – Your card needs to be renewed yearly, so plan ahead to avoid any lapses in access.

For Renewal Patients
If you already have a medical cannabis card and need to renew it, you have a few options:

Telehealth Renewals – If you are renewing with the same provider, a virtual visit may be an option.

In-Clinic Appointments – You can schedule an in-person renewal visit at our South Jordan office.

Attend an Event – We offer renewal opportunities at select events for added convenience.
Important: Renewals may only be initiated within 30 days of your card's expiration date. We will send you a reminder email when it’s time to renew.
New Changes as of 2025
Enhanced Patient Education

Product Information Inserts: Medical cannabis pharmacies will provide detailed product information inserts, including dosing guidelines, side effects, and safe storage instructions. These will be accessible via QR codes, online links, or paper handouts.

Online Product Details: Pharmacies are required to post product back panel information on their websites starting July 1, 2025.

Warning Labels: Beginning January 1, 2026, medical cannabis products will include warning labels for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Utah Center for Medical Cannabis
Updated Fees
Transaction Fee: A $1.50 transaction fee will be applied to each medical cannabis purchase starting July 1, 2025.

Patient Card Fee: The fee for obtaining a medical cannabis patient card will be $8.00, effective July 1, 2025.
Improved Access and Delivery

Opaque Bags: Patients can bring their own opaque bags to transport medical cannabis purchases from pharmacies.

Expanded Delivery Options: Legislation allows for the delivery of medical cannabis to more address types, including workplaces, enhancing accessibility for patients
Anti-Discrimination Measures

Workplace Protections: Public employees who experience discrimination related to lawful medical cannabis use can file complaints with the Utah Labor Commission.

Enforcement: State agencies or political subdivisions that discriminate against medical cannabis patients may face penalties, including the withholding of future state appropriations
